Buena Vista Social Club Concert in VaraderoVaradero

During the 1940s, the Buena Vista Social Club was a members club in Havana with musical activities and a popular meeting place for musicians. Almost 60 years after the club was closed, the Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and the American guitarist Ry Cooder initiated a project with traditional Cuban musicians, including some veterans who performed at the club during its glory days.

The Buena Vista Social Club became an international victory, performing in 1998 in Amsterdam, followed by a concert in Carnegie Hall in New York City and leading to a Grammy Award. The German cineaste Wim Wenders filmed the concerts and the documentary became a boundless success.

Leading stars as Compay Segundo, Rubén González and Ibrahim Ferrer never retired and performed until the curtain fell for them for the last time, in 2003 and 2005, with the respectable ages of ninety-five, eighty-four, and seventy-eight.

Ever since 2006, the Buena Vista Social Club successors have regularly played at Plaza Americas Concert Hall in Varadero. With occasional musical guests, such as Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa, Guajiro Mirabal, Salvador Repilado, Barbarito Torres, Hugo Garzon, Aguaje Ramos and many more, you will sense the musical magic of this legendary golden period.
